G&S light operas do have all the grandeur, and more, than many of the grand operas, and Arthur Sullivan's music exceeds many, I would rate him with Elgar and Purcell as the top 3 English composers.
Not sure what you mean by "the pain." I've never experienced any pain watching opera so can't comment on that. Although I did have bad cramp while watching Seigfried after playing football that morning, does that count?

The Mike Leigh film TOPSY TURVY about G&S is very good. About 20 years old with Jim Broadbent as Gilbert. Timothy Spall & Ron Cook in it too.

Coffee - He was definitely a regular, happy presence on the box growing up. Glad the old fella is still around.

I use to love Richard O'Sullivan, was in Dick Turpin, too. Now lives in a retirement home for actors in West London.

WS Gilbert used to live in a stately home in North London and gave up a large part of his grounds to develop an 18 hole golf course around 1905, it's owned by the members on a debenture of which I used to be one for 20 years.
Oh and The Mikado
